About the Metal Detectives

The Metal Detectives Group was established to help those who are interested in the exciting and thrilling hobby of metal detecting. Giving fellow metal detectorists the chance to pursue their interest in unearthing the secrets of our past with other like-minded people.

The group was set up in early 2011 when we realised, after managing to obtain permission to detect various sites, how some detectorists must struggle to find land to search. This group is to help all detectorists to find land to detect on a regular basis, whether experienced or new to the hobby. So far we have had increased interest and we have a lot of members who are kind, friendly and responsible detectorists.

The group's aims are to bring detectorists - land to detect, a friendly organisation and hopefully some great friends along the way.

About The Organisers:
Our names are Karen & Mark and we are the organisers for The Metal Detectives Group.

Hi everyone,
Metal detecting is an obsession of mine and it all started when I was 9 years old and I got my first detector from my Grandad, a Tandy metal detector. Now almost 40 years later I am so obsessed with metal detecting that I ran a metal detecting shop 'Hidden History' with my former business partner David, to date I currently run the Metal Detectives Group with my wife Karen.

I've always loved learning about history ever since school when I went to the Verulamium Museum in St Albans on a school trip, I brought some replica coins at the museum and loved looking at the amazing connection these coins had to the past. I got into detecting over 9 years ago because of my husband Mark, and with his years experience and expertise I soon became obsessed with unearthing history! When I saw my first real Roman coin come out of the earth, I couldn't believe the last person who touched it must have done so around 1600 years ago! I will never forget that coin, it was a Urbs Roma - obverse description:Helmeted bust of Roma facing left, and reverse description: She wolf with head to left suckling twins. The coin was of copper alloy struck after AD 330, during the reign of Constantine I (the Great). This is my favourite as I will never forget the first time I saw it! I still have my replica coins from my school trip as a child and I still love to admire them for they were my first inspiration into history and the amazing hobby of metal detecting.
